题目/Title:Love in Shades of Black and Yellow: An Investigation into African-Chinese Interracial Relationship Strategies

内容简介/Abstract:

Sino-African ties were established centuries ago, but a recent spike of African migration to the southern part of the Middle Kingdom has ignited researchers' interest in the relationship between the African continent and China. Despite the official cooperation and friendship between China and Africa, racial attitudes towards "hei ren" migrating to the Middle Kingdom can be perceived as discriminatory in terms of beliefs held and subsequent treatment meted out by Chinese.

While most studies have focused on migratory demographics, trading and, to a lesser extent, racial attitudes between the two, none have delved into one interesting, but important aspect of these ties: intimate relationships. This research intends to fill this gap by zooming in stigma management strategies of African males in long-term romantic relationships with Chinese women. Based on interviews collected over a six-week period in three bustling African enclaves in Guangzhou, Guangdong province, the researcher will examine strategies of Africans when dealing with perceived stigma from their partner's family as well as from the general public. Further to this point, the assistance of the Chinese partner in handling perceived discrimination will be examined as well.
