Content introduction:

Volunteering plays an important role in the delivery of social goods and services. Volunteering and participation in voluntary organizations, the mainstay of grassroots civic engagement, are considered as important sources of social integration. However, we understand little about the volunteer participation of urban Chinese citizens. Based on the micro level data from twenty-seven urban cities in China, this study first describes the patterns of volunteer participation. In the multivariate analysis, SEM model was used to test the social resources theory. We find that besides education, income and social capital, “political status” and “type of work unit” also have a significant effect on an individual’s volunteer participation.
