INVITED TALK

Topic: International NGOs in China: History, Current Situation and Challenge

Speaker: Han Junkui

Time: September 25, 3-5pm

Location: 2026 The North Main Building

Language: Chinese

ABOUT THE TALK:

As rising non-state actors, international NGOs reallocate charitable resources in the name of public interest and tools for development, which has catered to the diversified needs of vulnerable populations in the global. Meanwhile, international NGOs have had a profound impact on international politics, and brought challenges to the development agenda of sovereign states, especially to the developing countries. Under China’ long-term principles of “Three Prohibitions”, the profile of international NGOs that have launched activities in mainland China have remained vague. This talk address important issues related to international NGOs in China, such as their trajectory of development, legitimacy, relations with local organizations, and public support. It comes up with policy suggestion to avoid possible risks these NGOs may bring to China and to support and encourage the ones that are beneficial to China’s development. The talk also offers insights for Chinese local NGOs to go international.
