On June 23, 2013, under the leadership of Qiao Dongping, a teacher of School of Social Development and Public Policy of Beijing Normal University, seven students visited "Beijing Sun Village Children Education Advisory Centre" (hereinafter referred to as "Sun Village") and carried out the eight-hour "Family and Child Welfare" practice activity. As a public institution that takes care of minor children of prisoners for free, the "Sun Village" is a warm home of minor children of prisoners and is committed to helping persons released upon completion of a sentence get a job. This activity aims to enhance students' perceptions on child protection services through field research on the public institution and personal life experience, thus promote the combination of theory and practice.

Ms. Zhang Shuqin, the founder of the "Sun Village" provided strong support for the activity and warmly received us despite her busy work load. This event mainly included two parts – the institution visit and the voluntary activities. On the morning, Ms. Zhang introduced the history of the "Sun Village" and her nearly 20 years of work experience. After a preliminary understanding of the development process of the "Sun Village", the teachers and students donated a number of books, toys and stationery to the "Sun Village" and paid a visit to the "Sun Village" base and farm. On the afternoon, the teachers and students carried out voluntary activities - nursery weeding for the "Sun Village" together with the staff.

The students all said that such activities benefited them a lot and enhanced their perceptions on what they learned in class. Through personal experience in the field research, the students understood how child welfare services are provided, delivered and realized. They hope they’ll be given more opportunities to participate in such activities in the future.
