Former UNDP China Chief Representative Arthur Holcombe Gives Lecture at SSDPP 

 

The 7th SSDPP academic salon for the 2010 fall semester was held in the Arts Building on 9 November2010. Former UNDP chief representative in China, Arthur Holcombe, was invited to the salon. Drawing on his 30 years of experience and thought in the field of poverty alleviation, he spoke about poverty reduction strategy with Chinese characteristics and the function of "poverty funds" in poverty reduction.

 

In the lecture, Mr. Holcombe introduced in detail the evolution of China's rural poverty reduction efforts since 1979. He divided its evolution into four stages. Mr. Holcombe used his work in the promotion of Shangri-La in Yunnan to meet "United Nations Millennium Development Goals" as an example and analyzed the role of foreign NGOs in China in Chinese poverty reduction. He pointed out that anti-poverty funds from abroad focus on the most deprived areas, playing a complementary role with the Chinese government in poverty reduction measures. At the same time, they introduce international experience and of poverty reduction techniques China, and also energized the growth of local Chinese NGOs.
